Why are Genwunners so obsessed with Pokémon being not too off from real animal designs?

They forget that this series is about monsters, not only off color animals with elemental powers.

Nostalgia bias that encourages them to willfully ignore the flaws gen one has as well as ignore the similarities in designs to current gens
They like to complain about cartoony styles while conveniently forgetting how cartoony many of the original 151 were
They also like to complain about oversimplification when there was plenty of oversimplification in gen 1
The most common argument for "detail" I see is the occasional focus on a handful of lines on, say, wings or a stomach that don't actually add much for detail
It's just blatant fanboyism

also, whenever a modern pokemon is even slightly detailed, they screech "DIGIMON! OVERDESIGNED!" but when it isn't detailed, they whine that it's lazy and designed only for merchandise.

Nope.

The only Pokemon in gen 7 I would count as an "ambiguous creatures" are Comfey, Poipole, and Naganadel. Everything else is just an obvious cartoon version of something from real life.
