The looping routes mean you don't need fly just to get around. You can cycle or surf almost anywhere you want to go.

Pros :
The most diverse region up to date full of secret areas and stuff to explore
Awesome soundtrack
Cool new pokemon
Emerald is a real addition to R/S (Enhanced plot + battle frontier)
M A Y
Just enough water (it's only 30% of the region and it makes the world look big and alive)

Cons :
No more Night and day
Too much water (if you don't like using repel/exploration)
The new characters are kinda meh besides M A Y and a few others (Flannery, Steven,...)
The sprite work is a downgrade from gen 2 in term of elegance and aesthetics. Still great though
