I'm playing through Pokemon Gaia now and it's pretty fun. Nothing mindblowing, but the villainous team have have better rosters than in any official game, and there's been nice variety in the region.

Honestly, that's the only thing I'm looking for in a fangame. I'm more of a collector, so getting new things, in this case new mons is a lot more exciting.
Bad design or not is something I worry about second.

Urgaynium is a mediocre game with good ideas, but when compared to most fan games of this series it’s a ducking flawless god tier gem.
Seriously, some many Pokemon fans games have left such a bitter taste in my mouth that it meant most of my memories of Uranium are good in comparison.

I don't know much about this meme but I'm pretty sure that's not how you use it.
On the off chance you're being serious, I enjoyed the challenge and having to come up with strategies instead of just powering through all the content like in the main games was a real nice change of pace.

All fangames are shit. Literally every single one of them.
It's hilarious when the fans say "lol I can make a better game than Game Freak!" and then proceed to make a game much worse than even Gen 6.
And no, ROMhacks don't count as people making better games than Game Freak because all that's doing is adding seasoning to an already cooked meal that you had no hand in making in the first place.

That still leaves more room for strategy than
a. level up
b. use the type that beats theirs
Honestly though, I only played it and Rejuvenation because I saw them recommended a lot. What would you recommend as an alternative? I don't follow fangame developments much.

No, it really doesn't. It's actually worse, because they're forcing you to do things in only one or two ways. It strips away anything that you might want to use, in favor of giving every possible advantage to Ame and her friends' terrible self-inserts while you're stuck with nothing but the scraps that fell through the bottom of the barrel. They actually removed Budew from the game because Roselia and Roserade weren't shit enough. Reborn is a shining example of failing at game design on every front, and this isn't even getting into its horrendous writing.

There is not a single, solitary good idea in Reborn that isn't immediately undermined by at least six fucking idiotic ones.
