Where the hell does SS Anne even go after it sets sail? Vermillion's water is completely enclosed by Cycling Road and rocks. Is this a government cover-up?

It was supposed to be a bridge. Gameboy graphics were just too limited to properly depict it. When remakes happened Gamefreak had a seizure at the idea of changing a single tile of kanto, so now it's a landbridge forever

Its based on the actual real world kanto region in Japan which includes huge cities including Tokyo (represented in game by saffron and Celadon). Also a big theme in gen1 games is technological development

Well those rocky reefs near cycling road weren’t there before. I believe you couldn’t surf off cycling road because there was a railing, which to me implies that it was supposed to a bridge (and I know different canon but iirc the anime showed cycling road as a long drawbridge). And we know that it is vertically higher on the celadon city end than the fuschia coty end. So my guess would be that it’s some sort of naturally occurring land bridge that somehow formed enough of a cavity to allow a ship passage.

Can't you see how many more (pine) trees there are in Jotho? How much of the place the cities eat up? Even the routes are plagued with concrete or cables.
Even as a Kid the contrast between urban Kanto/Rural jotho was obvious to me.

I think the idea is the north side is actually supposed to be at a much higher elevation, Fuchsia's area of the region is much closer to sea level such that it has a beachhead whereas Celadon's is much higher, hence the Cycling Road would actually be a high bridge that has a slope going downwards as you head south.

Thats how it works in HGSS, but the textures in FRLG imply the road is made of ground so who fucking knows. I honestly think gen 1 and 2 it was intended to be a bridge, and in FRLG they just recreated the old confusing textures, and for HGSS they fixed the design, but then LGPE comes along and turns a bay into a lake
