Johto opponents grow slowly, but obviously because of that so does your team - which means it's about the same challenge as other games where both you and the opponents grow faster.

In Gen 2's defense, there weren't really many good TMs, especially not at that point in the game. Houndour/Houndoom can't learn Flamethrower or Crunch until much later levels, and the only other move Koffing could've had at that point by level up is Selfdestruct.

HGSS should've fixed this guy's team to be;
- Rhydon Lv40 - Fire Punch, Aqua Tail, Thunderpunch, Stone Edge
- Gliscor Lv40 - Fire Fang, Thunder Fang, Earthquake, X-Scissor
- Magnezone Lv41 - Discharge, Gravity, Thunderbolt, Flash Cannon
- Weavile Lv41 - Night Slash, Dig, Aerial Ace, Ice Punch
- Houndoom Lv42 - Dark Pulse, Thunder Fang, Heat Wave, Sludge Bomb
Rhydon would be a fairly basic way of showing that Archer is walking in the shadow of Giovanni's might, the Gen 4 evolutions (yes I'm aware they're not in the dex, fuck Game Freak for doing that) would be a way of distinguishing the HGSS team from the GSC team since there is no way for him to have those Pokemon in GSC or at least not of the same caliber, and you keep Houndoom since it's his ace.

I think when they did HGSS they should've smoothed out the level curve such that it went;
Lv14 -> Lv18 -> Lv21 -> Lv25 -> Lv28 -> Lv32 -> Lv35 -> Lv40 -> (Lv45 -> Lv46 -> Lv47 -> Lv48) -> Lv50
It's still a shallow curve but it's smoothed out and there's a distinct jump between the 8th Gym Leader and first Elite Four member.

The game is shorter than the average. Its completely fine to have a lower E4. With how fucked up the exp curve is in gen II, a default lvl50+ E4 would be a fucking nightmare to grind for.

Am I the only one who thinks Gamefreak has ALWAYS been an incompetent dev team and always has been? They just had a lucky streak, is all.
People only notice now because the 3D era makes the flaws more apparent. Gamefreak has always been rather lazy and awful game designers and this thread proves it, but I still love Pokemon for its concept and potential. Which is why I play more fangames than official games.

Honestly I don't get why they didn't make their teams more elementally relevant, especially given they were introduced in the generations where Weather became more prominent, if Maxie's Team worked around Sunny Weather and Archie's Team worked around Rainy Weather I feel that would've made them considerably more challenging.

Camerupt loses its only Stab Move, Mightyena doesn't gain a STAB move and lost a saving grace in Swagger, Crobat is better for type coverage but without Confuse Ray it's too fragile, Weezing lacks any form of countering its single weakness.

Also Haze works against Scary Face and Curse.

meanwhile Archie's Sharpedo got Crunch in ORAS which is a stab that works with it's mega Strong Jaw and poison fang which I guess kinda helps against grass types even tho crunch is still stronger if unresisted
the rest of Archie's team is just as bad tho

I feel like HGSS missed out on bumping the number of admin battles, they could've easily set up more plot points across the game that involve Team Rocket, like maybe they are doing some shit in the Ruins of Alph and have stolen some of the pieces needed to solve the Kabuto Puzzle, keep the Slowpoke Well encounter, have an encounter in the Underground Tunnel in Goldenrod. You could have the encounter at the Ecruteak Dancing Hall remain but have it be extended into the Burned Tower with Team Rocket infesting the tower and the player teaming up with Morty for that. Could also have Team Rocket attempting to get the Ampharos from Olivine Lighthouse and the player teams up with Jasmine, you could also have a small Team Rocket encounter at Cianwood City where some grunts are harassing the Pharmacist for his medicine. Overall that adds 5 more encounters with admin teams that could go like this;

Should have been better, but can't shit on ORAS for replicating the originals to the point of fault, it's what every remake does. Same issue with HGSS' level curve and Pokemon distribution. GameFreak just doesn't understand that people want improvements instead of the same game with better graphics.

This one however, one could argue that the Ground-Type is the one that Team Magma is associated with, Numel is part Ground-Type and Groudon was only Ground-Type until Gen 6, even so both teams lack a severe amount of representation of their respective views.

You look at villains like Team Rocket who use various Poison-Type and Electric-Type Pokemon, Team Galactic who more so focus on Dark-Type Pokemon and Team Skull who use Unevolved Pokemon and they fit their overall views pretty well. Team Plasma doesn't really have any Pokemon that fit with its view so it's fine although Team Flare fails just as much as Team Magma and Team Aqua do imo.
