This was when the anime died. No it wasn’t when Mega charizard BTFO out greninja or when Darkrai and Latios swept Ash’s team. Dawn’s failure foreshadowed what was to come at the sinnoh league. The anime writers just have a fetish for your main characters always losing an de if you kept watching after this then you deserve sun and moon.

Actually I say the anime died at the end of Johto after Brock and Misty left but they kept going with Ash and Pikachu. That was literally the perfect point to have Ash's "journey go on" and then start with a new protagonist and story and make that a trend but they were fine to just do the same bullshit forever

You'd have a point if not for the BW anime having terrible battles. Iris was a shitty trainer despite growing up with an Excadrill that got her 99 straight wins.

You cannot compare the anime to One Piece, Dragon Ball, Naruto, Bleach, or any other shounen series because it is not a shounen series. Shounen series end and target adolescent boys. Pokémon is MEANT to last forever because that helps keep the popularity of the franchise afloat. Yes, you can have better anime stories, but keep in mind this anime is purposely targeting a different demographic.

Also just gonna throw this out there, but Special/Adventures isn't that good.

How about I compare it to its contemporaries Yu-Gi-Oh, Beyblade and similar shows that are made to sell you something which also continue production indefinitely that actually do change up the protagonists and even story with each new generation?

Contests were a terrible concept.

The point system swayed as plot demanded and often the character who deserved the win would lose because the point loss amounts were nonsense.

The way contests work in the anime confuses me.
If a knock-out means a win in the battle round, what's to stop some champion/elite four level trainer from winning by just stomping everyone?
All they'd have to do is get past the appeal round, then they're guaranteed to win.

Yeah, that's what I mean.
The current anime is absolutely an advertisement for merch and trading cards, though, so I dunno how to categorize it.

In the anime contests were just battles with more creative liberties, so they were contests in name only. Showcases were basically contests in everything but name since those focused on the liberties rather than having battles.

It's just strange that there's no rule that prevents someone from just battling like it's a normal battle. The point-per-dodge system is moot if the Pokemon gets knocked-out.

The reason it's less hatable is that the anime is constrained by a checklist. They have to show off all the new mons. They have to deal with multiple subplots. They are forced to follow the Japanese equivalent of TVY7. They are forced to put neon filaments in the grass. The Special does not. The Special can afford to be serious because it's not trying to show the Pokemon world from a more casual perspective.
I still think the Special is bad, but liking bad things is ok. It's easy for the Special to sucker me in when the object of comparison is way too casual and tedious for me.

I don't follow the manga at all so I was pretty confused when I saw threads about the B2W2 arc.
Are all of these really written by one guy? Toriyama was on the verge of insanity after just 15 years and he only had TWO series, and they didn't even run concurrently.

Yup, at the time of SM's release BW2, XY, ORAS, and the new SM arc were all running together. He's got a handle of the schedule now so USUM is neatly finishing up but BW2 is still in a limbo of sorts.

i don't, personally. i compare it to digimon, another toy commercial in the same genre. there isn't so much as a nanosecond of the pokemon anime that matches the sheer ambition, maturity and soul of tamers. and digimon's attempt to do shonen with savers shits all over xy.

It's the weekly schedule that drives mangaka to madness. Kishimoto didn't go on his honeymoon until 12 years after he got married because he had to wait until Naruto was over.

This was much more obvious during the Zoey-Nando semifinal battle, where both coordinators exchanged blows gracefully and masterfully. Dawn was absolutely astonished at the level of competition she is facing, almost doubting whether she is at their level yet. Zoey has always been more skilled than Dawn.
