It does tho. Crunch and Bite are fucking physical attacks, there's unique nothing about them that puts them on the same tier as moves like Ice Beam or Thunderbolt.

There are like 2 unique themes. The box legendaries don't even get their own theme.

If these were suddenly to disappear from history the franchise wouldn't change a bit. No one gives a fuck about headbutting trees or fishing contests.

It's a physical attack, why would it need to be special. Either way the Split was the best thing to happen to the series.

Gen II is definitely what made the franchise the monster it is today. I don't think the franchise would have survived without all of the stuff Gen II innovated on.

That being said, I think that Gens IV and VI had the most impact on the franchise's core gameplay mechanics. The Special/Physical split was legitimately huge and the Battle Frontier and WiFi made competitive battling accessible.

Gen VI was to the overworld what Gen IV did to the battle mechanics. Player customization, circlepad movement, being able to unlearn HMs, and unlimited TM usage were all things that were really necessary for the "immersion" aspect of exploring. Of course this all got assraped by the endless tutorials and rails, but they're still excellent changes that should be praised.

You know those 2 aren't mutally exclusive right? They're simple enough that they should've been in the first game without no trouble, but they're also completely fucking useless so it doesn't matter. Just because Gen 2 has them doesn't make it any better. Johto is still the 3rd worst gen, 1st and 2nd being alola and kalos

You're thinking of the phys/special split that came in gen 4. Gen 2 was the special split, splitting gen 1s special stat into special attack and special defence

What? We literally know for a fact that things like a female protagonist, pokemon genders, and friendship were literally intended to be in the first games before being cut.

Pokémon was still a practically a new franchise of the time, so what you’re saying is that they should have known that Pokémon was going to be HUGE and all the features to incorporate? Nothing works that way, this is the most common thing I see in people that talk down on the earlier gens is the comparison to later gens instead of being evaluated for their impact at the time that they were released. If you don’t like Gen 1 and Gen 2 just say it out right instead of parroting ignorant nonsense.

People, especially the ones that started playing well after gen 2 grew ignorant of these additions because they became the standart in later games. I mean sure, later generations do add some important features that have stuck to the series ever since, but like it or not, Gen 2 brought the most plentiful and iconic ones to the table, you know why? Gen 2 was suppose to be the last entry of the series, so they literally went all out with those, implementing all these features, balancing gameplay, and even including online features with records and shit (yeah it was on japan only but it was a thing reguardles, im guessing if cellphones were as big in the west too we would have got it as well.) Gen 2 games are literally called the ultimate pokemon games by the developers and i get that, and as much as you hate that, its still true.
