how, other than a lamer animation style does it break conventions anon? if ash won kalos league xyz would've been handed itself the most badass anime adaptation yet. /vp/ is still obsessed with it years later. once gen 8 starts there will still be a lillie thread here or there but that is a character that has an appeal as a ralts does.

The things I like about the Pokemon anime are when they take the time to explore the lives and activities of Pokemon doing whatever, or Team Rocket experiencing greater points of character and heart than anyone else in the sea of relatively mundane cyclic Pokehumans

If they have enough of that, then I'll be satisfied

SM's art style was done for the sake of humor, but it's known that it wasn't liked to the point that a producer tries damage controlling by saying that "every series is different even though it is true that SM is much different".
If anything, it sounds like they're ditching the SM style and going back to something sharper later.

It was literally because SM was going to be a "humorous" series.

this is not true, SM animation has more details and frames per scene, of course now it's much worse for non important scenes [due lack of time or I don't know what] but still, gen 6 literally mad ton of generic animations but in new quality

OLM developed techniques and software and hired new talent to work with the animation style of SM, it wasn't something planned overnight that they can just throw in a whim
Old art style isn't coming back except maybe for movies, it's most likely that they work with a new character designer and art direction but keeping the style as round and loose to allow freedom the animators currently have

Trust me, Alola's smaller in all regards because they don't actually add any filler towns. Then there's it being broken into four segments and you pretty much got a smaller than normal region. It also doesn't help that it doesn't even take long for anyone to travel between the islands in the show.

That staenent doesn't invalidate anything, the fact that they went through all that development and preparation proves they were serious about it. Not all but many things learned during SM production will carry over future productions like it or not, that's just how studios work.
