Wow I really don't remember it looking that bad.

I guess it makes sense given that before the SP every game looked like various shades of black unless they had really bright colours.

gen 3 nosepass was the same in the tcg, anime, official art etc as gen 4+ nosepass

It's weird because his sugimori art for gen 3 looks like the normal blocky design
That's one reason i really like gen 3. It feels like the last gen to have weird idiosyncrasies like this

The original GBA didn't have a back light, which ended up making some games, such as Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, very hard to see. To help compensate, a lot of developers started giving their games lighter and more saturated colors.

The GBA fat's legendary shit screen was so terrible that nintendo mandated that every GBA game must use excessively bright palettes and absolutely minimal dark colours. This is why no GBA game has a good palette.

This continued even though everyone completely abandoned the fat model the fucking instant a GBA with a legible screen was made.

Different lighting tech in the hardware and the screen means the colors displayed richer and darker on a GBA, but bright and abrasive on a modern LED screen.

Ironically, the first time I played CotM was near a window, under the sun.

On the other hand, Harmony of Dissonance was exacly what it says on the tin, the music was on par with GB titles.
