I stopped following the anime once Hoenn started airing, I’ve seen bits and pieces of the anime since then. Gen 4 as a whole was the “serious” era of Pokemon, with the evolutions of old, classic Pokemon, the introduction of god-like Pokemon, and the design philosophy of darker and “edgier” colors/themes. The anime seemed to be a bit more serious, when it came to battling, during gen 4, so the fact that it was really the first series to have significant weight to it in a long time, made it way better. Not to mention excellent choreography and twists and turns during the battle between Ash and Paul made it amazing. Even the bs fight afterwards thatw as Ash vs Tobias, was actually really fucking good.
