Gold Parasect is one of my favorite sprites ever. The pose, the color choice, the shading make it seem much more menacing than it is in reality, and the fact that this Pokemon is so terrible doesn't do the excellent design any justice.

Yes, Parasect's always had a mouth. It's just poorly positioned so it looks like another segment rather than a mouth.

The older sprites reminds me of a fully cooked lobster.

I think the biggest difference is having the edge of the mushroom placed over its face (and expecially eyes) or its neck.
It completely changes the tone of the design. I prefer the creepier "hooded" Parasect, but the design with the marble eyes is perfectly fine on its own.
