I based this 100% on design only as you said. There are some others I don't really like but I don't mind them either, it's more of a "meh" (like Magmortar-Electivire-Rhyperior) so I didn't include them. Also I was too lazy to look for mega pics, so pretend Mega Manetric is there.

a few months back i had a conversation with a guy who disliked pic related because it was a departure from the more "monstrous" designs that earlier generations were known for, but was ambivalent towards pokemon based on inanimate objects, like aegislash

so im just wondering what kind of philosophy everybody has towards design preference, hence this thread

Tbh I was on the fence whether to include him or not. I like his shell and his design idea, but his face is what breaks the deal for me. But on hindsight I guess he's more of a "meh" and shouldn't really have included him.

Almost all of gen 4's legendaries are terrible. Phione is basically a shit Manaphy and is completely pointless, the lake trio look more identical than the genies, Dialga and Palkia are just clusterfucks, Arceus was a terrible idea though doesn't have the worst design, Heatran is also a mess and the only good part is the eyes, while everything else is passable at best.

Volcanion is also pretty fucking awful. Mostly because the head is terrible. It would be alright if the head was more rounded.

My philosophy on pokemon design is that its:

-Must be simple and easy to remember. If you can't roughly draw its outline from memory its too complicated
-Humanoid pokemon should have distinct features that make them clearly none human, such a Hitmonlees weird rectangle body, Gallades Scisor arms, etc.
-In fact, all pokemon should have defining features that separate them from there source material counter parts, even if said pokemon is an ice cream cone

apart from that, GF can do whatever the hell they like.

For me personally, it's where I draw the line on the immersion front. Pokemon are supposed to be animals, why is one wearing a fucking gi? This applies to object pokemon as well, though I'll usually give ghost types a pass because possession is a thing.

Regardless, you can replace the word animal with monster in my post and the point still stands. Animal was just a catch all term for a fantasy parallel to the vast number of non-human entities that live on our planet.

I actually really like a lot of the Kanto designs and am apathetic about the Johto ones. I agree about Alola though.

Gen 7 felt like a return to form on the design front after gens 5 and 6. There were some shitty ones, but I never felt more spoiled for choice when choosing Pokemon that I liked the design of to use on my team.

One theme that I really dislike are the man made pokemon, stuff like magnemite, grimer, trubbish all those. Also I wouldn't hate dragonite on his own, but the fact that it evolves from dragonair just drives me up the wall.

The closer to full human functionality a Pokemon is the less I tend to like it.
There's a couple of different categories I use
>Human proportions
>Human range of movement
>Human range of expressions (including facial expressions and gesticulation)
There's only a few Pokemon who I think truly max out in all 3 categories.
1. The Machamp line, but it actually works their because the entire point of the line is to be uncanny pseudohumans
2. Incineroar, who is humanoid as a side effect of bad design philosophies

But there's plenty of other Pokemon who sit on the end of "too humanoid" for me like Blaziken and Lucario

I'm okay with humanoid poke as long as they look like aliens than people and the first stage is also humanoid. The entirety of Johto sans Scizor, the Larvitar line and the starters. Everything else is just so dull, hideous, bland or ugly. Nothing good about this craptastic place exists, it's like they wanted you to just forgot gen II was a thing.

Special mention goes to Stantler, Qwilfish, Corsola and all baby evos plus all the water types in general. Especially Lanturn, I wanted a cool anglerfish since they're such unique and interesting creatures and they gave us a disgusting weeb fish that doesn't look anything at all like what an anglermon could have been.

This entire region is so much wasted potential man. Johto sucks.

Well ok I love Octillary too but Beta Octillary looked better and Octillary was horrifically gimped in terms of battle, but at least it's creative I guess. Remoraid is trash though and the two really shouldn't be related even if one's a squirt gun and the other is a tank. It makes even LESS sense then.

Gen 6 had a higher percentage of good designs than Gen 7
Both were miles above Gen 5 tho.

only about 2 and a half on this list are ones that I "dislike", the rest are kinda just ehhh, and there's a WHOLE lot more Pokemon that I'm sort of just ambivalent on. I tried my best to exempt those, because otherwise they'd fill up a whole other chart

Also I'm sure this list of mine will change like, next Thursday, because I'm pretty picky with this kind of stuff

most of the pokemon i dislike are shillmons like incineroar and charizard. but in terms of pokemon that i hate by design, i really hate hawlucha, idk why but it just looks really ugly

Before Gen 5, I always went with the Fire starter first. When they first revealed the Unova starters, Tepig was my first choice, and I hated Oshawott's design. And then their final stages got leaked. Oshawott's evolutions kept getting cooler, while Tepig's evolutions kept getting uglier.

I wouldn't have even bothered with this stupid wrestler pig if I hadn't already used the other two before B2W2 came out. Ironically that team ended up being one of my favorites in spite of it.
