>>38317033Kanto DID have a better story, it was the most story focused series, even the Gym leader battles were told as stories that taught lessons of teamwork and perseverance. Pikachu beat Onix because he trained hard, it was shown as a shounen battle and even then it had Ash taking advantage of a sprinkler system, in the later seasons it would have been more lke the games, but watching people shout out moves isn't actually telling a story, it's advertising said games.
The bad guys were thieves and gansters, Ash was hot-heated and quite typical of a 90s protagonist, even the Pokemon had more personality, Pikachu getting pissed after TR survived the SS Anne shown more character than every later season where he sits on Ash's shoulder and shouts his name, or S/M where he pulls moe faces and holds awkward poses.
