ok /vp/ I have not played the 7th gen at all, I was turned off by people complaining about the hand holding being cranked up from previous gens

but im curious, how bad is it actually? like on par with XY or is it significantly worse?

like most issues on this board, its exaggerated
USUM is significantly harder than most Pokemon games difficulty wise so its nowhere near as easy as XY

The moment to moment gameplay (Battles) are less casualized but it drowns you in dialogue/tutorials.

besides the many tutorials there's a fucking minimap with flags and the region has barely any side paths and despite that the characters STILL waste your time telling you where to go

It blocks you from going off for the most part. The real problem with USUM is that the encounter and trainer battles are atrocious in comparison to regular sun and moon. The game is much better than X and Y as someone's who played through both within the last two weeks

I wouldn't say it's as handholdy as xy in terms of battle difficulty, unless you use the z moves, the totem battles and grand trials do require strategy to overcome if not overlevelled and towards the end there's more and more fully IV'd trainers
but then elsewhere it does gets pretty handholdy, the rotom dex tells you where to go every five seconds for example is obnoxious

More like every year. Last year /vp/ loved Alolan forms, Ultra Beasts and following Pokemon. Now they hate it because I guess we have to hate what most people like because contrarianism.

This. You would be hard pressed to find a Pokémon game where the flaws outweigh the fun stuff. The people saying "literally unplayable" are twising the knife while pouring salt into the wound. It's not GOTY, and it's got no business being GOTY, but it's worth your time regardless. OP, if you wanna get the best out of the experience, skip SM and go straight to USUM.

The handholding and gameplay-breaking dialogue is pretty incessant, but imo it’s perfectly tolerable for an initial playthrough. It gets really grating on replays though.
