XY and SM were pretty bad, I guess ORAS and USUM are okayish, so the entire generation 6 and 7 aren't bad? Well they are kinda not so good anyway.

I think there is good and bad in each gen, in terms of actual Pokemon.
In terms of gameplay and mechanics I think that it peaked in III and has been downhill since with VI and VII being particularly bad.

I think judging generations 1 and 2 only on the GB originals is unfair since they're remakes completely outclass them and still have soul and charm. Gen 3 was well made enough to stand on its own, but i consider ORAS gen 3 as well just to be consistent.

I find that the slow engine of Gen 4 games is a deal-breaker that genuinely makes the games bad. The battles are made unsatisfying as a result of the slow pace and belated impact, just wasting the player's time for no payoff. Failing on such a fundamental level as how your game performs as a game cannot be forgiven.

Define "bad."
I found the in-game story and gameplay of 6th and 7th gen to be incredibly lacking, but I found their online and VGC play to be 10/10 perfect. I absolutely loved played gens 1,2, and 3 as a kid, but having to go to Toys R' Us to get event legendaries was a pain as I didn't have a car until third gen. Gens 4 was great fun, but was DREADFULLY slow. Gen 5 I have no real complaints about. Overall I wouldn't call any games "bad," but I also wouldn't call any of them "the complete package good in every way" other than maybe Gen 5.

I think none of them are bad but i dislike gen 5 the most. too many legendaries, tried to hard to be a soft reboot(pun intended), and the pacing sucks (which is saying somethng when gen 6 and 7 with their constant cutscenes and tutorials exist)

felt close to disliking gen 7 i'll admit, i'm probably just getting older and cynical

I'd say Gen II is the only outright bad generation, if only because it isn't really its own generation at all. It's an expansion pack of Gen I more than anything.

Just because the region wasn't designed to stand on its own doesn't mean the games themselves can't.

There are no gens that are unfathomably awful. The worst a mainline Pokemon game has ever been is "painfully average". Some just have more going for them than others.
Each gen has its flaws, but I've never played a game and was frothing at the mouth at how "bad" it was like some of the autists around here.

I'm not going to defend Sword & Shield looking like Sun and Moon 3: England Edition. It's disappointing in that regard. It will still be fun, but I'm expecting another "average" experience. Gamefreak needs to try harder.

I think the early gens were decent for the time but don't hold up. I think more recent games don't really come up to standard you'd expect for modern game in a very popular series but aren't genuinely bad because they more or less meet expectations.

So no, but there's plenty of shit to be flung, legitimate and exaggerated and they are not really amazing games.

Even if I enjoyed LGPE, I would still argue they're the only objectively bad simply because of all the cut content and the fact that FRLG outperform them in every aspect, bar graphics. All the other main games are in the same league, there is no objectively bad gen; it depends on the player's preferences. But subjectively, I think Gens 1 and 3 were bad. Gen 1 has the excuse of being the first/earliest installment, but Hoenn was a shit region, FRLG had some really shitty design choices (still no day/night, no cross-gen evos, etc), and Emerald didn't fix any of RS' main issues.

I don’t know how anyone can complain about gen 7 Pokémon designs. Taken on their own merits almost all the new additions are cool. The problem is the overabundance of ultrabeasts, and the starters.
