What if In an alternative, Pokemon-mania never happened and pokemon would have ended with gen 2?
Would Pokemon was a short-lived franchise be praised as niche RPG's like Earthbound?
How would the global media change without pokemon being a cultural phenomenon?

I feel like if Pokemon died early on, people probably wouldn’t look back on it so fondly. Gen 1 hasn’t aged well and the original gen 2 is fine for the most part, but overall I think it’d be pretty forgotten
...unless they added a ton of Pokémon to smash, and in that case you’d have people begging for new games 24/7 (see: F-Zero)

No.
Pokemon is a solid JRPG but Earthbound is so much more than that. I'm not saying it's a philosophical work but there's a level of craft and intelligence in the dialogue and the world that puts its ahead most RPGs even the critically appraised ones like FFVII (which I love)
It's not my favorite RPG (which is Chrono) but MOTHER goes beyond the "ahah it's quirky you can fight hippies :) " meme

The discourse around mon games would be different since people wouldn't be able to just write them off as Pokemon clones, with the implication that you should play Pokemon instead. Because Pokemon would be dead. It would become as dumb as continuing to call all FPSs Doom clones.

Nobody cares about the gameboy, even in retro gaming. The system is just too primitive.
Pokemon is one of the rare GB games that are still emulated alongside Tetris.

digimon would have been more successful. the original v-pets came to the west shortly before pokemon did, and without pokemania to contend with, they could have easily coasted on the tamagochi fad for huge sales.

i doubt not having Pokemon would affect me liking the Browns. Though I would probably need to find something else to deal with the crushing sadness.
