The thing is, UBs have either too much misplaced detail, or are run on being gimmicky, which ruins the design by making it so no particular characteristic comes across as well as other pokemon.
Take Toxicroak. He's a biped blue dude, until you add the huge red vocal sac. The vocal sack makes the design, all other characteristics are secondary to it. That's balance, that makes for an interesting monster... that doesn't make me look at the screen, see a bunch of shit thrown together and frustrate myself. I do like poipole though, even though naganadel doesn't please me.
