Base set Charizard was always a sought after card for kids during it's hayday because cool dragon
a lot of cardshops that were privy to this jacked the price up a ton to capitalize on this during Pokemania's peak during the 90's early 2000's
it's one of those self-fulfilling prophecy type deals which is funny because base set charizard isn't even a good card LOL
