Basically because, while it gets absolutely destroyed by certain Pokémon, it can survive most Pokémon without losing any health overall. Because of this, if your opponent has a Ferrothorn then you have to conserve your Ferrothorn counter. Sometimes it can pull off wins from even 1-5 down because those 5 can't beat it.

Obviously a solid team would have ways of making sure that doesn't happen, but a lot of "salty scrubs" don't really plan for the metagame.

Its still really bulky and Pokemon that can reliably use special Fire moves are usually Fire types.

Standard Specs Magnezone traps Ferrothorn, Celesteela, Mega-Scizor, Skarmory, bolt+beam Magearna, and Choice-locked Kartana.
Scarf Variants traps all of the above + SD Kartana.
Sub+Zmove variants trap everything Specs does + Mega Mawile and Bisharp.

Scarf magnezone will lose to ferrothorn if leech seed lands
It literally has to run either sub+leftovers or specs and be basically useless vs everything else if it wants to beat ferro
