What are your thoughts on Ash? Real character or just a vessel to transport us from season to season to see more 'mons?

He's a real character but an inconsistently written one. With a few glaring exceptions he does grow and develop as a characters. But occasionally, either through needing to contrive a scenario or sheer incompetence, the writers forget that and have him lapse back into retardom.

He's been both and flip flopped over the course of the years. Generally he's a nothing character of pure idiocy who will never accomplish his dream and the few times he does fantastic, it's just reset and he's made more stupid.

ash isn't a character, ash is a title
at the end of a season the title of ash is taken away from the current holder and is bequeathed to the next chosen holder, along with the memories of the past owner of the title
he is a concept

He's a lot like a comic book character in which there's certain qualities that are immutable about him, but others that change from arc to arc and writer to writer. Within the context of a season he's usually pretty consistent.

I'd agree with this. After watching ultra sun and moon series recently, it baffled me how Ash ONLY had his Pikachu (completely ignoring any of his past mons existed), and how he acts as if it's his first time seeing/doing things even though he's experienced them before.. such as seeing legendary pokemon (when Ashe has encountered numerous legendary pokemon before), witnessing mega evolution, etc.

You were never meant to be watching the show from S1E1 up to present day like it's the fucking Sopranos. You were meant to watch a couple seasons as a kid then move on, and each new season serves as a semi-reboot for new kids to jump straight in without having to watch decades of context to know what's going on.

The whole show reminds me of early manga, not so much nowadays but the first couple of seasons lacked any real animation. So it was more like flipping through panels. It's all super tropey in the same way too

Stating "this is how it's supposed to be watched" is entirely just your understanding of it and is only an opinion, not fact.
The fact that things such as character relationships, certain knowledge, and more IS passed on from season to season entirely opposes that "that was how it was intended to be consumed". And past knowledge IS needed to fully understand the series. Sun and Moon for example has an Aggron mega evolve at one point. If you hadn't seen X & Y, you'd have absolutely 0 clue wtf is happening. That scene bets on the fact viewers have already seen mega evolution in past seasons, as it doesn't explain it whatsoever.

His character should have ended at DP. BW, XY, and SM Ash feel like there is no consistency with him. DP was where Ash was at his best from where he began in OS. BW changed him entirely and he feels like a new character every series now.
