say what you want about them individually but they're easily the starters that compliment each other the most (other than KANTOOOOOOO's)

Can't argue there, I like the classic rpg theif/fighter/wizard aesthetic. No other group of starters really have a theme. It's a shame chesnaught wasn't grass/steel and Delphox's movepool is more geared to support.

Sinnoh's were myth-influenced(World Turtle, Sun Wukong, Poseidon's Trident)
Unova's were stylized after Cultural empires(French,Chinese,Japanese)
Alola's feel like a repeat of Kalos(Ranger,Berserker,Bard)

no anons, sorry, but gen 2 is by far the worst set of starters because all 3 are boring monotypes with forgettable designs that have like 2 colors
HOWEVER, if we look only at third stages, gen 5 is the worst by a fucking mile, saved only by the fact that the first stages are easily the best in the series

Honestly I'd say the Gen 5 ones are the most complementary to each other, at least design-wise. They have characteristics that create a nice dynamic but don't have such overbearing personalities that they're stuck in specific molds and they have the most varying body types/stances that really highlight their differences. It's especially noticeable if you place all (fully evolved) trios in their own groups - there's usually one that tends to stick out from the other two whereas Unova's all pop. For better or worse, they definitely work better together.
Shame about the types and gameplay.
