What are some of the worst attributes of generation 2? I heard most of the good pokemon aren't until the kanto region.

Gen 2 is objectively the worst. It has terrible balance in the world design and the progression of the game. Many of the new Pokémon were exclusive to the post-game, which itself was highly lacking.

They sacrificed a lot to add Kanto in but it damaged the game

There's only one issue with Gen 2: not enough Johto mons available in the region. Apart from that, it's the perfect set of games.

Who cares if Kanto wasn't fully fleshed-out, when Johto was? We were lucky to get another region in the first place.

I would have traded Kanto Postgame for a denser Johto. The Liquid Crystal romhack shows what Johto could have been, with a lot more places to explore that don’t interrupt the flow of the game.

Low level opponents, new pokemon unobtainable until late in the game, baby pokemon, shit meta, bug-catching contest, the entire idea of roaming pokemon, limited evolution stones, the list goes on

Gen 2 is great for its aesthetic and I enjoyed the large map, HGSS added many great features but honestly failed to fix the core issues of the games and most of the QoL features weren't carried into the next gens.

Stones are almost unobtainable without praying for a phone call to yield one
Reused team rocket which was so goddamn boring and lazy

Those are the big three. HGSS mercifully added the Safari to capture some mons that would normally be Kanto only, but you have to wait like three hours for it to open or some shit.

But transferring a Pikachu, Clefairy, Electabuzz, or even Chansey is pretty simple compared to sending over a finite Pokémon like a starter, fossil, or Legendary.
