I think they're the only generation of starters where each of them is so close in terms of design and in-game usability
but I think Empoleon reigns supreme because of that 10/10 typing and more reliable stab moves

Never said they weren't. Only gens I see getting tons of hate are gen 1, 6 and 7. B2W2 is one of the most praised games along with the rest of the DS era (except Diamond and Pearl, that game is one of the most hated ones despite being the same game as Platinum)

Because one of the problems is that the starters ARE forgettable. I never said that there are Gen 5 hate threads that constantly trash on the starters 24/7. I said that there are Gen 5 hate threads in general. It is just that one of the problems that gets hate on Gen 5 is that the starters are forgettable. It is irrelevant the amount of time it gets discussed as that is an arbitrary quantity that can never be measured therefore should not be discussed. Forgettable is forgettable.

Yes, the original design sucked, the new takes they've had on them (gen 4, gen 5 pokemon based on the same concepts, gen 6 megaevolutions and gen 7 alolan forms) are all way better and constantly improving.
