You're thinking of a different fight. The one in the image is the very last fight you can have with your rival in the original Gen 3 games and I'm pretty sure it's completely optional as long as you never intend on entering the Lilycove department store. This fight also sucks extra dick since your rival isn't using a fully evolved starter so you'll always have an entry missing in your Pokedex since nobody else in the game uses the starter line. It also lead to some hilarious incidents as a kid where I did not fucking know what a Combusken or Marshtomp evolved into without just replaying the game with those starters.

Doubled up on weaknesses way too much. Also, doubled up on resistances way too much. Bug, Fire, Water, and Grass types have very little effect on most of her Pokemon. Trace handles this much better with a more varied team, meaning none of your Pokemon will feel like a wasted slot against him.

Actually, yes. Held items and specially abilities have a huge impact on battles (you won't be using ground moves on gastly or tackling a raichu without ocnsequences on a modern game) whereas megas not only come very late in the game, only a couple of trainers actually use them and there being no abilities means that megas are mostly just a stat boost.

Get 6 Master titles.
Beware that fully evolved pokémon form Master Trainers have several hundreds worth of candies thrown at them, so even if you come with a strategy to beat them (they also do) you'll probably need some grinding in the form of either higher levels or lots of candies.

The only thing I'd change is the Rapidash. Looking at the gen 1 Pokemon, a good replacement would be Primeape or a Fairy like Clefable or Wigglytuff.

This team is actually good on its own. The problem really is that it's objectively worse than Gary's team. Exeggutor > Vielplume, Rhydon > Marowak, Arcanine > Rapidash. Any of the three starters > Jolteon.

That's not a rule. Wally, Tierno, and Blue are the only other rivals who actually use the core.

Cheren, Hau, and Calem/Serena will use modify their teams based on their starter without sticking to a strict core.
