So does anyone else kinda think the "only new pokemon for the first two and then all sorts of shit for the 3rd version" thing of Gen 5 was a good move that GF really should have kept?

They sorta still do this with their disallowing transfer, and only allowing those in the regional dex in early events. These also tend to be the most enjoyable periods.

I find that I enjoy the games more when there's a more limited pool of mons to choose from.
When I've got everything at my fingertips I get overwhelmed and kind of lock up when deciding on team members. Plus it gives the new guys an opportunity to shine before they have to compete with every single Pokemon that ever came before them.
