The original reveal had froakie using some physical move while chespin used something with a black effect, so people thought they would be water/fighting and grass/dark, especially because they really wanted a reverse-type triangle for the starters for some reason

and one of the biggest reasons for it was that they really wanted an advantage over the rival. Even when I started playing pokemon as a kid I understood that they always gave the rival the advantage to give you a challenge to overcome. And even then, come on, do you REALLY need the game to be made that much easier for you? But no, apparently this was that big a sore spot for people.

no, they wanted REVERSE. So a water type whose secondary type would give them the advantage over the grass type. Water/Fighting, Grass/Dark, Fire/Psychic would've been that.
The typings we got were like... a double effective triangle

by the time your starter is fully evolved, this literally does not matter at all
it only matters in like, the second or third rival battle, when your starter has STAB moves but you probably don't have a great team, so your rival having a type advantage right off the bat can be a problem

this is why they had no problem giving Infernape SE STAB against Empoleon and Torterra SE STAB against Infernape

Yes, you just aren't understanding what is meant by reverse type triangle, an example is the grass type gaining a rock type, the water gaining a fighting type, and the fire gaining the flying type.
Dark, Fighting, Psychic is a type triangle, but with how it's handed out to the starters it's not a reverse type triangle

I thought Froakie was gonna be Water/Psychic and Chespin Grass/Fighting or Grass/Dark.
Nobody thought Froakie was supposed to resemble a thief when it was revealed. It didn't use the bubbles on its back/neck as a cloak or hood like it was shown to do much later. People assumed it was just a feature.
From what I saw, most thought it was going to evolve into a sage/wise-old-toad kind of creature, because the bubbles on Froakie's face resembled tiny spectacles, and its arm/hand was positioned towards its head, like it was deep in thought.
I remember there were a few "Benjamin Froakie" posts going around.

Do you guys honestly not remember this?

Ah, I remember people saying this too to help support the "scholarly" Froakie angle.
I don't remember that connection to Fennekin and Rommel, though. Probably because I didn't care enough about it to notice.

Six resists to common attacking types (Dark, Electric, Ground, Water, and to a lesser extent Ghost) and an immunity to Psychic would actually make it pretty decent. It works for Malaconda.
