Sinnoh has more history and tradition than the other ones, all had major metro areas, etc. Additionally, the first four gens were based on Japan, the biggest difference is that the next four are based on other countries

My point is, what about non-regional differences? For example, in terms of battle mechanics changes gen 5 was arguably closer to 6 and 7 than it was to 4 (e.g. scaled xp formula, a whole bunch of moves were changed in 5, etc.)

Gen 5 also gave us a non-north-locked camera. Free camera in gen 9?

Damn straight, it was like gen 3+ where the core visuals didn't change that much but added a lot to previous generations and just the game in general. Games after gen 5 changed too much stuff for my tastes and are just way too easy.
