Ignoring Pokemon that evolve again in later Generations, there's only 11 lines of Johto Pokemon I like using.

Only 19 of them are. There's nothing wrong with new evolutions, some were needed even back then, and despite what /vp/ likes to bitch about there's nothing wrong with Baby-mons ever. They're nice for people who play little cup, they world build and flesh out certain Pokemon, and most importantly they encourage people to breed Pokemon and try out a new way to get new Pokemon. And if there's any group of babies not to bitch about, it should be Gen 2, since they just introduced both baby Pokemon and breeding.

If you're complaining about baby Pokemon, why do you hate single stage Pokemon? And besides that's not true, 1 Pokemon wasn't that competitive back then and Game Freak wasn't concerned about making every Pokemon like so, and 2 there's plenty of Pokemon in Gen 2 with great stats. See Skarmory.

In short nothing went wrong, Gen 2 is still a spectacular evolution of Pokemon, and you only disdain it because it's currently growing more hip to hate Gen 2 because of bandwagon reasons.

I mean the dark type distribution is a bit crap but I think the johtodex stuff was a design choice. Gen 2 was practically Gen 1+ rather than something completely new and self contained and that is reflected in the dex.

Murkrow is a mixed attacker
Houndoom is a mixed attacker with special bias
Umbreon doesn't have significant offenses
Tyranitar is a mixed attacker with physical bias
Sneasel is physical

It wasn't until Gen III that there were a heap of physical/physical bias mixed dark types
