There's a video where one of the programmers for Sonic 3D Blast explains that part of the certification process for Sega consoles in the 90s was to literally just leave the game running for 3 days to see if it crashed, so he put a thing in the game to redirect all unfixable errors to a level select screen. This is why you can get to the level select screen by wiggling the cartridge.
