It means pokemon can be used in different ways, and potentially gives value to monsters that are weak at battling
Hypothetically, if your favourite design happened to have bad moves or bad stats (or both), having a totally separate mechanic in the game allows you to use the guy you like and not have to grind for it to be useful
One of the biggest flaws with contests in pokemon is that, for a pokemon to get better at battling you make it battle, and it levels up. Through leveling up, you learn new moves, grow in stats, and maybe even evolve
However with contests, you get better them by collecting berries, grinding them into blocks/poffins, and battling to learn new moves
