For water types you can use aquatic creatures, for grass type you can use herbivores or insects, same for bug type, etc. Many of the non-natural (I'm not saying fire isn't part of nature, you understand what I mean) are animal+typing slapped on. Charmander is a clever idea because of the whole fire salamander myth, but yeah, unless you base it off of myths or preconceived ideas/tropes, you'll pretty much end up with animal+typing. That's also why Sobble is an interesting pick, it's the first water starter that isn't an actual aquatic creature, but rather animal+water typing slapped on.
