Do Pokemon actually lay their eggs, or do they just spawn?

Because considering the size of those eggs, it would be really damn weird.
How does a Pikachu lay a Pichu sized egg?

The anime has already shown that egg hatching is magical and things bigger than the egg can hatch. It's not unlike the way a pokemon magically increases size upon evolution.
The anime also shows infant Pokemon that are smaller than normal though.

Didn't the Arceus cutscene from HGSS also basically prove that eggs are made out of energy instead of biological matter? Also, in the game lore the breeders and daycare people always say that "nobody has ever seen a Pokemon laying an egg" etc.

Pokemon are energy beings after all, how else could they produce astounding amounts of water/electricity/fire etc. from seemingly out of nowhere.

A lot of people seem to take this as "no adult want to explain the pidgeys and combees to someone else's 10-year-old". It makes sense that a children's game would avoid any information about breeding/sex due to the implications that would arise when putting Skitty and Wailord together in the daycare.

Story and gameplay segregation. For gameplay reasons, some sexually incompatible Pokemon end up in the same egg group, and you can't breed special Pokemon because they wouldn't be special if you could make an infinate amount of them to trade to your friends.

They lay the eggs

After laying, eggs can swell as they're still soft and malleable
After they dry is when they usually harden

I never bought that explanation, because the breeders and daycare people even say that to older protagonists, like the ones from Gen 5 and 6, who should be familiar with the birds and bees. That makes it sound like they legitimately don't know how the eggs were made, rather than being squeamish about bringing up the topic.
Of course, the real explanation for this is that Pokemon is a children's game, and children's games can't talk about sex.

I always imagined they're some sort of magic bullshit. That's the only way to explain how Pokemon of such different shapes and sizes can successfully mate, how they can create so many eggs so quickly, how the eggs produce fully-developed and battle-ready offspring, etc. I bet they probably pop into existence too, rather than being laid.
Also, in both the games and anime, they produce bright flashes of light when they hatch, so there's probably some weird kind of energy involved with the whole process.
And of course, there was that guy in XY who said Pokemon eggs are not really eggs, but "cradles" (whatever that means). That suggests there's something strange about them that makes them different from how real-life eggs work.

Old official Japanese Gold/Silver guidebook. I think it was actually somewhat common for Japanese guidebooks for JRPGs in 90s to have a lot of ambiguously canon lore details not in the games.
