Give me opponents with well thought out movesets, give me puzzles I have to solve to earn a Pokemon, have me pay attention to little hints of what is out there so I have incentive to explore and whatever you do make me EARN my victories.
Most of the things you listed are RNG or simply waiting, neither of which is difficult. Just boring. It's not hard to teach my Pokemon some random HM and press A whenever it can be applied, nor am I going to struggle to beat some random trainer because I can't use Take Down instead of Cut or whatever. If the game had me use HMs in a specific way and order that I can mess up then maybe I'll be engaged, but walking up to thing isn't fun. If the opponents had proper sets, strategies and AI then maybe I'll feel threatened, but steamrolling them with a slightly worse move than normal isn't an obstacle. There is no challenge in making something take longer.
