Neither, they started with Detective Pikachu because they're smart enough to see the whole "epin Pokemon journey with battlin' and catchin'" is not a good basis for a movie.

Why can't they continue making spinoff stories in the Pokemon universe?
Do they HAVE to go for the basic "kid tries to get all 8 gym badges and become champion" route. Detective Pikachu is one of the freshest plots introduced to the series in years, why not create more like that?

I think if they continue with the movies and establish a good fanbase for the "PCU" if you will, and they get secure enough to release a two-part deal each with significantly longer runtimes than the hour and 44 minutes they're doing now, that would be their best shot at being able to do it well.

But Pokemon works in ways other than the mainline games' basic journey, that's why there's so much spinoff media, that's why they spent god knows how much on this movie.

There's WAY more to the Pokemon universe than just battling, though. This movie is trying to expand the universe by showing what happens in a city that's way less populated with battle arenas (of course, there's a battle arena in the trailers, but that seems more like some type of illegal underground shit so I'm not sure if that counts)

Actually, THIS is the spinoff.

If they ever decide to tackle RBGY they should hire strictly Japanese actors for most characters since Gens 1 to 4 are based on Japan, they could go and start with Unova or even damn UK region for an easy start.
