Do you fight random encounters when they happen to you, or exclusively only fight trainers for leveling up?

I typically KO wild pokemon when I first start, but as the game progresses I run away more and more to the point where I'm not fighting any of them. Trainers give enough exp. I've never had to grind in a pokemon game before.

I will fight every single encounter, and never run away. I am not a coward and my pokemon aren't either. Even at 1 hp my pokemon will keep fighting and if they faint I box them. It means they weren't strong enough to be in my team. Weaklings

When I'm feeling particularly stingy with money in early game (so not buying Repels yet until I feel I have enough disposable cash), It makes cave traversal more dangerous, and you have to take PP more into consideration.
