That was my original plan after I heard about it, so I took out my old AR. The piece of shit doesn't register in my DS and is probably dead. Then after countless tries I gave up on it and thought "oh well, I guess I'll speedrun w2 and unlock challenge mode"

I just played Black 2 on Challenge Mode. Iris, the E4 and some of the PWT trainers are actually strong enough to KO at least 1 of my Pokemon now. This is actually hard.

THIS is how you do a proper hard mode. Make it so that the cap is like 3~5 levels lower than the lowest level pokemon of the gym leader. For the E4, the cap can be like 10 levels lower since at that point, you already have a higher TM, held item and pokemon availability compared to the beginning of the game.

I mean many turn-based games can add difficulty without enforcing grinding, like Etrian Odyssey or Shin Megami Tensei where learning the mechanics is more valuable than a few extra stat points.

But any 'challenge mode' GF would implement would be nothing more than bloated levels. Even giving NPCs extra Pokémon is too much to ask of a small, poor company like GF.

I feel like they kinda tried to do this in gen I, as badges determine which Pokémon will obey you. It always felt so bizarre to me that it only applied to traded Pokémon, so I assume they somehow fucked something up and decided it was easier to leave it like this.

And if you wanna get even shittier you're forced to fight slightly overleveled Pokemon, like Gym Leader aces are a couple levels above your team.

this is a symptom of FinalFantasy bullshit. Most decent RPGs actually have distinct strategies that have optimal work arounds based on team build or strategic use of specific skills and spells. Only crap like the mid/late 90s era FF and the tidal wave of garbage inspired by itin the following generation fall back on running in circles to up numbers to create artificial difficulty. If you actually played any RPGs other than Pokemone you'd know that.
