I think the Anime and the Dex grossly exaggerate the size and majesty of Onix.
Onix are probably way smaller & shorter than they're actually depicted. Especially because this Anon is painfully correct: >>38417150

Onix is probably closer in size to Arbok or something. Arbok actually has higher base stats than Onix if I'm not mistaken?

What? I mean the anime and dex are often inconsistent with each other but they are at least canon to themselves.

The real answer is that GF needed Brock to have a cool-looking ace, but obviously couldn't have the some 600 BST monster in the first gym.

In RBY the only legal Psychic move for Starmie is Psychic. The game would have ended there for you; with base stats of 100 Special and 115 Speed any of the two/three Grass-types available to you at that point would be literal trash since they're too slow and part-Poison. A same-level Raticate with Hyper Fang would give you better chances.

In Gen 1 the only legit damaging Psychic move Starmie can learn is Psychic via TM. Even if they wangled it with Confusion, it still doesn't bode well for any of the player's Grass options available at that point in the game since all of them are part-Poison.

The fuck am I supposed to call someone who wants a multi-elemental Special sweep set on the second Gym fight? A saint?

For the record, Misty's Starmie has 2/3s of its natural Gen 1 moveset, with only Harden missing. Giving it Bubblebeam and taking out Harden from the movepool isn't dumbing down the fight since it won't sit there wasting a turn upping its fairly adequate Def when almost all player strategies aimed at its weaknesses would be Special-focused.
