To me, the best artstyle was that brief transitional period between gen 2 and early promotional Ruby/Sapphire, where they moved on from the watercolors and dropped the pseudo-DBZ look, but still kept some traces of the old artstyle.

People who say this shit never know what the fuck they're talking about. Toriyama's art was never as angular or sharp looking as Sugimori's old style, character proportions are widely different, Toriyama's style is typically much more detailed, and you can hardly call the coloring and shading similar. Clearly the influence is there but you're fucking retarded to call it straight up aping his style

Sugimori's earlier arstyles don't translate well to 3D, while any of his later arstyles seem to fare better. I would say his mid 2000's human designs were his best but is a shame he dropped watercolors by then. I feel like his newer arstyle lends well to 3D it came at a cost of having his faces having blander expressions and the "chipmunk mouth" that I loathe so much

Aping means it is intentional imitation, I don't think Ken Sugimori intentionally stole Toriyama's style or even resembles it at all. The styles are vastly different and Compare how Toriyama draws children to Sugimori, the difference is night and day. People like to bring up the eyes a lot, but the 90s as a whole has a lot more sharper angular features that were present in shonen-oriented manga. Sugimori's art is a product of the times not a Toriyama rip=off.
