It was a “Mystery Gift” in every sense of those words, at least in Gen 2. You could get random items like berries and room decorations if you connected to another Gen 2 game. I guess the name just stuck around for later generations and GF didn’t bother to change it.

I never go back to specific section of the underground.
But HGSS has neither, so it'd better to at least let you decorate the room you will be thrust into every time you defeat the E4.

There's also been serial code events that would give randomly selected gifts. The biggest one was the Arceus event for the Hoopa movie, where you'd get one of 17 different Arceus, selected at random.

I actually wish you it wasn't limited to timed distribution and you could still connect with someone else once per day to get a random treat. I loved that shit in GSC, even if the IR sensor was kind of finicky
