The combo of HGSS release and BW hype overran 2010 /v/. Even before that there was a huge presence, as Pokemon General was the very first vidya general and had existed for at least a year prior (my memory is fuzzy).
So the late mootykins created /vp/ - Pokemon (briefly /tr/ - Team Rocket).
Now during 2011 the hype had fizzled out and a content drought was entered, and the board was swamped in pokefucker content and memes like you wouldn't believe. To anyone familiar with slugfucker, not even that was quite comparable to the Dark Age of 2011. The culture itself was tainted. By the end of the year anons wished for board deletion and spoke with moot about it.
Come 2012, /v/ was having its own crisis. Generals, generals everywhere. Starcraft, League of Leagues, Katawa Shojo, and the like plagued the front page 24/7. moot, in his shortsighted foolishness, planned to create /vg/ and considered sending Pokemon there if /vp/ were to be axed.
So at this time he reached out to /vp/ and asked what anons wanted. They voted in favor of preserving the board and cracking down on furshit cancer.
And so /vp/ has continued to exist for 7+ years afterwards.
