Not really, early on they really aren't enough of a boost to be meaningful, and they get outclassed by a lot of stat raising moves anyway

I caught groudon in SS with a level 53 Gallade using these to pump it up
Also they are great to raise friendship super fast

Literally once an X defend let my empoleon just barely survive cynthia's garchomp's earthquake in order to 1-shot it with avalanche, and that was kinda cool, I think it was the moment that finally flipped the switch in my head to realize "oh hey, there's more to this game than just throwing out as much damage as possible every turn"

Before Gen VII, no. However, the SM games actually made them useful to use on slower Pokemon since it now raises stats by 2 stages.

I just realized that I have never used a single X item in any of the pokemon games I've ever played. I forgot they even fucking existed after BW2...I'd get congused when checking my items and get confused seeing X items in there without realizing what they were.
