FRLG/HGSS are basically nostalgia trips, that deviate very little from their source material outside of a few straight upgrades. I think that's part of why ORAS just didn't do as well, it basically ignored the vision of the original games and made an extremely modernized take on Hoenn, missing the point of a remake entirely. I think the extra oldness of the limited TM system works to this game's benefit, especially if the goal was to evoke the feeling of playing GS back in 2000.
