Competitive noob here, I don't understand the move Substitute.

Is it usable in slow Pokémon? Because you waste a turn setting it up, and then get hit first after it breaks.

So if you're slow:

1) Get hit on turn 1 (lose HP)
1) Sub is up (lose HP)
2) Sub breaks on turn 2
2) You do your first move so far (deal damage)
3) You get hit for the second time on turn 3 and probably die (lose HP)

What's the point?

You're supposed to use it when you either:
1)know your opponent will switch
2)know that your opponent has no supereffective moves
3)have a good way to restore hp
4)intend to stall

You can put up a sub on a switch, or if your poke can take a hit with out the sub breaking, or just to stall turns for whatever reason.
It can be situational and you need to predict.

Nah, slow pokemon don't benefit much from it, unless it's a slow/frail wallbreaker that gets lucky with a predicted switch. A mega heracross might come in on a grass type that gets forced out. Normally the opponent would probably switch out to a flying type and OHKO next turn, but then if you predict correctly and get a sub on the switch, their check becomes fodder.

It's better on fast pokemon though. It makes you immune to almost all status moves, so if you predict toxic/leech seed/etc you get an almost free shield

If you are desperate you can also use it to fish for misses if they are spamming fire blast or confused from outrage or something.

Even bulky pokemon aren't hard to do 25%. Frail pokemon can benefit just as much as bulkies. It's about predicting good turns to use substitute, not having the substitute survive multiple attacks.

Sub also has niche uses of activating pinch abilities/berries at certain health percentages, or abilities like speed boost/moody

It blocks status, eases prediction, and lets you lower your health safely on certain sets where that's desirable. You generally don't use it on very slow Pokemon, though. Examples of where it's useful:

Prevents Kyurem from getting Toxic'd, which otherwise completely screws over Leftovers Kyurem. Combos with Pressure to allow Kyurem to PP stall moves like Stone Edge. Fucks over Seismic Toss users like Blissey, since 101 HP Substitutes survive two Seismic Tosses. Kyurem with an active Substitute can safely attack what's in front of it without worrying about predictions, since you still have a Substitute up if they switch.
>Substitute Gengar
Gengar is generally fast enough to get a Substitute up before the enemy attacks, which makes Substitute a fairly safe button to click. Substitute Gengar doesn't have to predict Pursuit users switching in, since with a Sub up you're free to either click the appropriate attack (Krookodile, Bisharp) or switch out (Aerodactyl, Muk-Alola) as you see fit. Gengar with a Substitute up doesn't have to predict much in general. Prevents Gengar from getting Thunder Waved.

Outdated at this point but the idea is simple. Putting yourself into Salac/Reversal/Swarm range is much easier with Substitute. Protects you from sweep-ending status while you're at it.

It helps them by making prediction less risky, dodging status, gives them setup oportunities, and more niche stuff like sub+endeavor or sub-salac.
Examples of sub users off the top of my head are Serperior, Blacephalon, Kyurem-B, Gyarados, Keldeo, Kommo-o, Mega Diancie, and formerly Zygarde.
