If you get rid of Lucario’s spikes and remove his steel type, and replace it with psychic, he becomes way more appealing. I have no idea why they went with the steel idea.

Nice typing? Yes. Fitting? No.
Mawile always looked like it was designed as a Dark type, but they made it Steel for whatever reason. It totally has that evil, trickery vibe, especially since all of its names have to do with deceiving, lying, or cheating. It's also based around biting and a great amount of its physical moves learned on level-up are Dark type.

I understood why you want it thematically, but I feel like Steel/Fairy is a good typing combination but stab Sucker Punch would be pretty nice. I actually kind of wonder if that would end up being a buff to Mawile or not. Losing weakness to ground is nice, but gaining weakness to Fairy is not.

Porygon and Wigglytuff are the only only Special Attackers that get STAB on it, and even then Wigglytuff is both 1. complete garbage anyways, and 2. gets Hyper Voice as a better stab options.

Says who? There are plenty of counterpart Pokemon where one is monotype and the other is dual-type. Scyther and Pinsir, Rampardos and Bastiodon, Escavalier and Accelgor, Heatmor and Durant, etc.

GF litterally confirmed in an interview the only reason it's psychic is that because back in gen 1/2 psychic was seen as "special", so it being psychcic is entirely arbitrary

and it's not the moon legendary, that's cresscilla or lunaala depending on how you wanna slice it. Lugia is meant to represent the sea vs ho-oh's skies.

So yes, it should be part water. It doesn't nessscatrily need to be part flying, though

That being said there could have been a better way of showing this, like Riolu being copper colored. Or the spikes doing a Wolverine thing on attack.

Where was it implied that Mightyena or Absol are evil, deceitful, mean, or pragmatic? "Evil" type is just as much as a misnomer as "Dark" type is, there are plenty of Dark types that don't fit into either archetype. Truly the only "requirement" for the typing is looking sinister/edgy, regardless of actual temperament.
