How is it so popular?
Is it the cannons or do people really like turtles? Don't get me wrong, the design is well put together but it's honestly nothing special.

nostalgia. whether or not it is a good looking pokemon is up to you, but nearly everyone in a specific generation played the first pokemon game as an 8-10 year old, and imprinted on the first one they specifically picked.

it's the same reason venusaur is the least popular of the three in the same audience - it didn't get a cartridge appearance, and bulbasaur wasn't prominently featured in the start screen like charmander and squirtle were in their respective versions. it had the same chance to show up in the scrolling bit as all the other title screen mons did.

as for why charizard is more popular than blastoise, it also goes with the same marketing. the games tend to sell better if their name is listed first (red, gold, ruby, diamond, black, x, and sun I do believe all sold better than their counterpart). so, charizard got first billing by virtue of being on red, so he's more popular than blastoise on blue, who is roughly equal in popularity to venusaur in japan because they got red and green.

charizard has been thrust into popularity on purpose since day 1.

Charizard and Venusaur were both pushed from day one in Japan. Being on the boxart and having the two of them in all of the promotional art while Blastoise had essentially nothing. GF does play favorites in most gens, outside of Gens 2 and 5 where they were all represented fairly.

it having a rough and tumble personality like that compared to sweet scaredy cat charmander only furthers the persona. the same personality they kind of baked into Incineroar as a species, notably, and everyone shits on it for being a "character" and not a pokemon, when charizard has been that for twenty some years longer.

Every Gen 1 starter is better than the starters from all the other gens, and the Gen 1 starters and Mew/Mewtwo are great designs. Only the bird trio are meh.

I liked the frog with a plant. Vine Whip sounded like a much more powerful attack than Scratch/Ember/Bubble by name alone to me. I also liked the -saur because I thought the frog would become a frog dinosaur.

Venusaur could have been a lot popular if Tajiri wasn't autistic to make a color meme to sell Green version only in 1 country. LeafGreen high sales and and being the main character's starter in the manga proves that Venusaur is a great Pokemon but casuals and edgelords just drool over fire and cannons only and not actual monsters in a monsters game.

feraligatr is a gator that walks like godzilla, greninja has ninja in the name and is pretty much always in a battle pose. they're cool by nature and intent. I love 'em too having never seen more than the charizard/magmar fight in the first anime and not indulging in the card games.

Chikorita is the weakest link but it's decent and paired with the best first stage fire and water starters.
I'd say
>Gen 1 and 3
solid first stages all around but nothing incredible
>Gen 4, 6 and 8
weaker than average but not awful outside of chimchar, ironically for gen 8 the monkey is the best of the bunch though sobble's got the most potential
>Gen 5
kind of settle around meh because snivy is a bit above average, oshawott is below average (it's got a bad color scheme and an ugly face, though I do like the shell gimmick), and tepig is totally average
>Gen 7
rowlet is fantastic, the other two are pretty eh but litten gets points for a fantastic color scheme
>gen 2
Totodile combines cuteness, potential, and immediate power in a way that I don't think we'll ever see again. I don't even know where to begin with cyndaquil, it's just wonderful. Lots of things that make it stand out without feeling tacked on like oshawott's neck clumps do, such as the unique head shape, squinted eyes, being a non red/orange fire type, etc.
Chikorita is for sure the blandest but it's got a certain simple charm to it. I certainly get not liking it.
