Chances are you have an Android phone. Get Drastic, it runs great even on low end phones. DeSmuME has good compatibility, and has less problems with clean/unpatched ROMs, but its slow even on high end PCs, because the devs don't care about optimization. Also, the creator of DeSmuME (yopyop) hates Pokémon.
There's a new emulator for PC (and with libretro core) called MelonDS.

I hear the Citra lead developer also intentionally ignored easily fixable issues that stopped Pokémon running better on that too, because he personally dislikes Pokémon and hates that 75% of discussion about Citra is in the context of Pokémon.
