Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres are called the Legendary Bird Pokémon by people in Kanto, and you can only find one of each. They're not present in Gen II and they're incapable of breeding at the daycare. Does that mean only one of each exists? Not necessarily. They could just be extremely rare Pokémon that are capable of reproducing but typically don't in captivity. After all, the breeding restriction is done so players can't mass produce Legendary Pokémon so that they still hold some through scarcity. There's never an in-game reason given. Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres are found in the remakes FRLG, and their sequels HGSS. Moltres has moved from Victory Road to Mt. Ember to Mt. Silver, while Articuno appears in the Seafoam Islands and Zapdos appears in or around the Power Plant. Are they all the same despite the three year difference? What about when they roam Sinnoh in Platinum which is concurrent with HGSS? And all this talk about different realities only further complicates things. While you can probably reconcile something like Red and Green together since no story differences exist apart from starter choice and you can meld version-exclusives into one definitive Kanto experience, what about Yellow? What about LGPE? Mega Evolution in Gen VI onward, retconning the "discovery" of new Pokémon and different regions to just not having acknowledged them before.
It's just one big mess.
