Right now at VGC events you connect using the IR port on the back of the 3DS. No wireless is needed, and, in fact, it probably wouldn't even work. In a room with hundreds of 3DS's and hundreds of phones interference would be through the roof. The Switch's joycons connect to the Switch using a serial connector instead of bluetooth when connected to the Switch physically and in airplane mode, but how will the Switch connect to other consoles? It has the IR camera, yes, but it's pointed down from the right joycon. Will live events have to be played with the Switch upside down so you can face the IR port forward at the other player's console? Will there be some dock rigged up with mirrors? Will they just have you connect with a USB-C to USC-C cable link-cable style like the old days? I'm sure they've already thought of a solution, but I'm curious what it will be.
