It doesn't have the specific title of 'battle bond', but it functions more or less the same - the show always makes a point of saying that Ash and Pikachu are very in sync and that Pikachu can often tell what Ash wants from him in a battle without instruction. There's no transformation or Ash feeling pikachu's pain himself, but Ash-pikachu with his hat are advertised as a special gift like Ash-greninja was. Also Ash feeling greninja's pain was some of the stupidest shit ever so even if it is a new addition it's a terrible one and doesn't deserve any credit.
tl;dr Ash having a super special pokemon with super strength thanks to their bond with him is nothing new and anything that was new or different about Ash-greninja was fucking stupid

They're little kids, a kiss on the cheek could warrant that reaction from them. Also Ash has had so many kisses on the cheek at this point that who even gives a shit.
>Did he fall into depression every gen?Yes. Every time Ash gets beaten badly he gets depressed (like when Paul destroyed him in DP132 and he moped for the rest of the next epiosde). Every time Ash gets depressed, it only lasts for one fucking episode. Just because X and Y knows how to use dramatic camera angles doesn't make it any less samey.

I certainly was on the edge of my seat waiting to find out if he'd have a fully evolved water starter or if he'd defeat the champion's favourite pokemon!! It adds so much!!
