You need a certain amount of info to fully enjoy a movie. That's why it's called a fucking movie. Every movie has a barrier to entry. You need to know who the characters are and what their motivations are.
You don't need to know much about Pokemon aside from the fact that they are creatures with magical powers that humans can befriend and tame. You don't need to know every single Pokemon's name. The Pokemon are just background characters anyway; the main stars are Tim (a human) and Pikachu, and everyone knows who Pikachu is. So that's not the issue.
Star Wars is 10x more complex than this movie and deals with far more supporting characters with deeper layers of motivations. Nobody says you need to be a Star Wars nerd to like Star Wars. How about Marvel? Or Jurassic Park? Harry Potter? Shrek?
